Femtosecond Laser-assisted Cataract Surgery

One of the most significant developments in cataract surgery has been the introduction of the laser-assisted cataract procedure.  We at Augusta Eye MD are among the first eye care facilities in the country to have adopted this latest advancement in cataract correction technology, and it’s likely we will not be the last.

For more than a decade, femtosecond lasers have helped surgeons perform LASIK with unparalleled precision and accuracy. Now it’s used to automate the most challenging steps of traditional cataract surgery.

While traditional cataract surgery has been and still is very effective, laser-assisted cataract surgery offers enhanced precision and predictability while also taking customization to a new level. Each procedure is specifically tailored to an individual patient’s anatomy to provide their best possible results.

What happens during a laser-assisted cataract procedure?

Our surgeons perform cataract procedures at our convenient on-site outpatient surgery center. From the moment you arrive at our state-of-the-art facility, we work to make your experience relaxing and pleasant.

The procedure itself takes only a few minutes:

  • We administer anesthetic drops and provide smoothing medication to ensure your comfort.
  • The surgeon uses the femtosecond laser to access and soften the clouded lens. Once it has been broken up and removed, an artificial lens is implanted—either a standard monofocal lens or a premium “lifestyle” lens—in its place.
  • Patients are released to return home soon after surgery and generally experience rapid improvement in vision.
  • Healing occurs naturally and quickly.
